Whether you're navigating anxiety, grief, relationship challenges, or simply feeling stuck, individual counselling offers a dedicated space where your experience matters. Working one-on-one with me means we can focus entirely on you—your story, your pace, your healing.

Over my 30+ years in private practice, I've supported thousands of people through life's difficult moments. I bring both professional expertise and genuine warmth to every session, creating an environment where you can explore what's happening in your life without judgment.

How Do I Find a Good Counsellor? What Actually Matters

You've decided counselling might help. But how do you actually find someone who gets you?

The honest truth? Research shows that the single best predictor of whether counselling helps isn't credentials or experience. It's how well you connect with them. You need to feel heard, understood, and genuinely safe.

    What Actually Matters

Do they specialise in what you're dealing with? A counsellor doesn't need to have personally experienced anxiety or grief to help. What matters is that they've worked with similar challenges and know research-backed approaches that actually work.

Do they use evidence-based methods? Ask about their approach. Cognitive counselling, attachment theory, acceptance and commitment therapy—these work because research proves they do. A good sign? They can explain it in plain language.

Can you afford them? Counselling only works if you can actually keep going. If cost is a barrier, ask about sliding scale fees.

Do you feel heard? This is the real test. In your first conversation, notice: Do they ask about your experience? Do they listen more than they talk? Do they seem genuinely interested in understanding you?

    What Doesn't Matter

You don't need a PhD counsellor. Master's-level training is equally effective. You don't need someone with 20 years of experience. You don't need the highest rates—cost doesn't equal quality.

    The Bottom Line

Ask yourself: "Do I feel like this person actually gets me?" If yes—or if you feel like you could get there—you've probably found someone worth working with. If not after a few sessions, it's okay to try someone else. Fit matters that much.

Can Counselling Actually Help With What You're Dealing With?

The short answer: yes. But let me be more specific, because "counselling works" is vague when you're the one struggling.

    If You're Dealing With Anxiety

Anxiety lies. It tells you the worst will happen, that you can't handle it, that something's wrong with you. Counselling helps you recognise when anxiety is speaking and develop practical ways to calm your nervous system. Many people see significant improvement in 8-12 weeks because we focus on concrete skills—not just talking about it, but learning how your body responds and how to interrupt that pattern.

    If You're Struggling With Depression

Depression makes everything feel pointless. But here's what research shows: even small shifts in behaviour (moving, seeing people, doing things that mattered) shift how you feel. You learn to recognise the thoughts depression creates and challenge them. You reconnect with what gives life meaning. It takes time, but it works.

If You're Stuck in Relationship Patterns

You keep ending up in the same dynamic. Different person, same story. Counselling helps you see why you keep having the same arguments—not to blame yourself, but to understand it. Often these patterns come from somewhere (family history, past relationships, how you learned to survive). Once you see it, you can choose differently. If you're navigating relationship challenges with a partner, couples counselling may also be helpful.

If You're Grieving or Facing Loss

Grief doesn't have a timeline. Counselling isn't about "getting over it." It's about learning to carry the loss differently while finding ways to move forward. Some grief work is processing emotions. Some is rebuilding identity (who am I now that this person/role is gone?). Both matter.

If You're Overwhelmed, Burnt Out, or Lost

Sometimes you don't have a diagnosable condition. You're just stuck. Counselling is a space to step back and think clearly. It's where you figure out what you actually want—not what you think you should want.

    The Honest Part

Counselling helps with all of these things, but it requires willingness from you: to look at what's happening and try something different. If you're hoping someone will fix you or tell you what to do, counselling will disappoint you. But if you're ready to understand yourself better and make different choices, counselling genuinely works.

    Why the Therapeutic Relationship Matters

You might be wondering: does it really matter who my counsellor is? Research consistently shows that the relationship between you and your counsellor is one of the most important factors in successful counselling. Feeling understood, respected, and safe creates the conditions where real change can happen.

I bring my whole self to this work. My 30+ years of experience, my training in attachment theory and trauma-informed care, and my own lived experience with neurodiversity inform how I show up. But beyond my credentials, I'm genuinely interested in you and your story. I'm not here to tell you what to do—I'm here to help you find your own wisdom.

Many clients tell me they chose to work with me because they felt heard in our first conversation. That matters. Trust your instincts about whether we're a good fit.

What to Expect From Your First Session

You're probably nervous. That's completely normal. Let me walk you through what actually happens.

    Before You Arrive

"What if I cry?" "What if I don't know what to say?" "What if they judge me?" These thoughts are so common I hear them regularly.

Here's what I want you to know: your emotions are welcome. Silence is okay. Nothing you tell me will shock or judge me. I've worked with thousands of people over 30+ years, and I've heard every story imaginable.

    The First Session Itself

We'll settle into a comfortable space. Not clinical—just a genuine conversation between two people.

I'll start by listening to what brought you here. I'll ask questions to understand your experience, not to interrogate. "When did you first notice this?" "What does a typical day feel like?" I'm trying to understand your story, not fit you into a category.

You don't need to have everything figured out. Most people don't. "I'm stressed but I don't know why" or "I feel stuck" is enough. We'll explore it together.

    What Happens Next

By the end of the session, I'll have a clearer picture of what's going on and whether we're a good fit. I'll share a bit about how I work and answer any questions about confidentiality, timeline, costs—anything.

    The Real Truth

That first session isn't about solving anything. It's about building safety and trust. It's about checking whether you feel heard. That matters more than anything we accomplish in 50 minutes. If you think, "This person actually gets me," then we've found something worth building on. If you think, "This isn't the right fit," that's important information too. You get to choose who you work with.
